John's New Mobile Home by John Iwaniec     30-Oct-09 06:03 am
Judy was so eager to see John's new mobile home now that it was all set up and furnished. Reluctantly, John had purchased a couch simply because she suggested it.
To most people the singlewide home wasn't much to look at. A rough, white caliche driveway led to the front door which had a cheap set of wooden steps to the entrance. Before Judy entered she looked about at the few Hackberry trees and clusters of Pear Cacti. No, by most standards it wasn't much to look at; to Judy and John it was as impressive as a mansion on a New England estate. They entered.

"Oh John, I love it. You were so smart to do this."

"Well, you know what I always say: Get the job done. I wasn't always sure what the job was, but here it is: home sweet home."

They marveled at how spacious the rooms looked now that they were completely furnished. Before them was the living room and dining room and kitchen which led into the master bedroom. "Aiiiieeee," Judy squeeled when she walked past the bed and saw the garden tub set in the large bathroom.

"Let me show you the guest room." They walked to the opposite side of the home to the first bedroom on the left. It wasn't so small for a mobile home. A made up twin bed accompanied by a study desk, night stand and lamp gave it a nice home feel. Everything was so clean and tidy.

Judy gave John such a hug that seemed to linger into eternity. At last John said, "There is one more bedroom."

The opened the door to the bedroom at the far end of the mobile home. Suddenly they saw a site that made them think that they were dreaming. Before them was a wide and long hallway with many doors on both sides. This couldn't be. The length of the hallway was longer than the length of the Mobile home. Apprehension came over them.

John opened the first door to the right. Before them was a large room elegently furnished with a hardwood floor, a huge throw carpet, and white oak paneling. They walked over to the French doors and opened them. Judy could scarcly breathe from the impossibility of the scene before them. A patio deck overlooked a wooded river valley and great mountains. Though the August temperature outside the mobile home was a hundred degrees the temperature of this pristine wonderland was a most comfortable 65 degrees. Judy wanted to lay down fearing that some terrible thing had happened to her brain. Yet, the beauty of the place was so compelling that they lingered and marvelled.

They returned to the long hallway. For hours they opened doors to see sights just as fabulous. Behind one door lay hills decked with pine trees and a blanket of snow. Behind another lay a desert with multi-colored canyons. Another had a beach at night in full moonlight. It seemed that the best of all the wonders of the world were just the turn of a door knob away.

At last they came to a door at the very end of the hallway. It had a gold sign which read: ANOTHER WORLD, ENTRY FORBIDDEN.
