can anyone explain to me how and why they got involved with such a disastrous invesment(s)

I just don't get it, this is supposed to be an old school conservatively run bank and they're buying this esoteric junk while getting their fingers burned badly.... unless I'm mistaken, they purchased numerous tranches for $254MM which are presently worth a mere $59MM.

Please tell me people were fired over this.
