The Airbus airframes are fly-by-wire dash 5 HMU applications of which Woodward has produced an average of 5-10 weekly for a decade. But the older dash 2 & 3 "can" CFM controls ARE the workhorses of the existing global fleet that probably account for the frequent T/O's mentioned above....the margins on the R&O work is what everyone is in this business to achieve.
The CFM 56 new generation fly-by-wire fuel control (as of 1995 or so) was won by Woodward's competitor and was a shot across the bough to Woodward when they were simultanously told they were the #3 controls and accessories supplier to GE and they were looking to consolidate to 2 suppliers. Hence the Phil Turner lead Kotter Model sense of urgency, case for change, guiding coalition, six sigma, transformation map, Gemenii consultants drive for the Aircraft division to become a core-competency focused, world-class total fuel system delivery supplier. They have improved that position to the point that GE has been plagiarizing Woodward's processes, lessons learned and best practices now for several years....I mean benchmarking:) Sounds a bit like #1 to me???
