UNUM's "lifestyle protection" is such a joke!

"California regulators will charge UnumProvident with more than 25 violations of state law...Regulators said they uncovered violations of state law in nearly one-third of a random sample of about 1,000 claims handled by UnumProvident.

"UnumProvident is an outlaw company," Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi told a news conference. "It's a company that has a corporate policy established at the highest level to systematically deny legitimate claims."

"Their policies will have to be rewritten to conform to this new program that UnumProvident has agreed to," Garamendi said. "Bottom line: No more slow pay, no more low pay. Honor your commitments or get out of California."

Garamendi, who in press conferences in Los Angeles and San Francisco characterized UnumProvident as "an outlaw Company," has threatened to revoke the Company's license to do business in California if the conduct in question continues. Ordering the Company to reevaluate some 26,000 California claims, Garamendi specifically found that for years it had intentionally interpreted its own policies so as to eliminate the very coverage its insureds were paying for.

Insurance Commissioner John Garamendi called Unum an "outlaw" company and said the insurer harmed consumers by denying claims.

"This company engaged in a strategy to increase its bottom line at the expense of its customers," he said.
