What's old?
1) Techne is still a buy at 62-63, if one wants to start a position, or increase an existing small position. Mine is large enough, therefore I don't add. 2) GenProbe (GPRO) made a nice, fitting acquisition in the molecular diagnostics market. How beautiful to have such a strong balance sheet and to add now and then a nifty small company to the existing portfolio! Since mentioning it some 2 months ago (and increasing my small position to one of my largest), GPRO's share price went steadily up from 38 to 43. Still not expensive. 3) Seattle Genetics (SGEN) had a setback ina ph2 trial of one of its drugs. Cannot be foreseen, but things like this are likely to occur when owning pure biotech plays. Down over 15%, not nice. Fortunately, however, SGEN is far from being a one trick pony. Therefore, no panic, Ladies and Gentlemen. I did not sell, nor add. What's new? 4) Well, it's time again to dive into St Jude (STJ). They have one of their more lackluster quarters (but hey, STJ is still growing and throwing off ample of cash!). STJ continues to be in a sweet spot in the medical device sector, has excellent managers, a good balance sheet, Nr 1 or 2 market share in its segments, and is trading a something like 13 times earnings. These are the times one wants to buy class companies such as STJ (or such as GPRO, some 2 months ago at 38, or Varian Medical (VAR) some 6 months ago when it was at 30). STJ was once a large holding of mine, which I downsized to a tiny one, when Obama came in. Now its up to a midsize to large position again. I do not expect big jumps in the stock price of TECH, GPRO, STJ, but rather a steady longterm upward move. Which is just fine with me. In the end, I am glad to make a long-term 15% CAGR of my investment portfolio, which as we all know, is not THAAAAT easy to obtain.... regards DrJohn Rating :
