slow steaming      4-Nov-09 04:22 pm
Interesting comments in the CC regarding slow steaming. Reduced speed reduces fuel consumption and operating cost. It also increases the demand for vessels. Cutting the speed of a fleet by 50% means that it will be able to haul half as much cargo during any given period; i.e., demand would go up by 100% just to haul the same amount of cargo. Since margins are so thin right now, reducing costs is far more important than taking advantage of high spot rates. I understand that this does not impact SSW's business plan directly, but the overall demand in the market will impact SSW valuation by the markets.
