You know what the real tragedy is regarding the meltdown of the financial system? For many years, bank stocks were considered to be a safe investment with a steady, secure dividend. Many widows and families held significant bank stock holdings. This was especially true in the case of SunTrust, which had been built over many years via a series of mergers with smaller banks, that were stock deals. With a low cost basis and a good dividend, many of these shareholders were not likely to sell. Having large shareholders who held the stock year in and year out gave lots of stability to bank stock prices. But this latest crash in financial stocks -- coupled with the elimination of the banks' dividends -- has resulted in the loss of many of these shareholders, who sold out and I doubt will want to touch bank stocks again anytime soon in the future, having been burned so badly. This has to be especially the case for SunTrust, which has completely lost its stellar reputation as a conservative, well run bank. This major sea change throws a wet blanket over SunTrust and other bank stock prices going forward. There won't be long term investors any longer in bank stocks. These stocks won't hit their 2007 levels for many years, if ever. SunTrust is just another bank at this point.
