Without question divesting of S&H is a smart move for SMG.
From an article in the San Francisco Chronicle... Scotts Miracle-Gro bought Smith & Hawken for $72 million in an effort to expand beyond its "grow and kill" products. "It softens our image. Smith & Hawken is more green, more natural, more outdoorsy," Hagedorn told The Chronicle in 2004. "We want to enter categories less chemically oriented and much more female." My question is simple, beyond blocking and tackling on grow and kill products. What is going to drive growth for SMG? Sure they are benefiting from a bad economy and competitors that have failed strategies - but that will only take them so far. What initiative is going to help the drive growth going forward?
