I work for LexisNexis      8-Jun-03 04:04 pm
I work for LexisNexis, and I've never heard of the pay freeze until 2006. Haven't heard of that rumour.

I can tell you some things I hate - and why I am job searching.

* LexisNexis is a business run by lawyers who weren't good enough to practice law. They are lousy managers, but you can't tell them that. They are combative, spiteful, resentful, and petty.

** Electronic surveillance of employees is way off the scale. Some areas have the computers set up so that everything is recorded. The screen scraper technology is impressive. Everything on your computer from keystrokes to what is on your monitor is recorded.

*** Because of this surveillance, it is super-duper easy for managers to fire those they hate. Violations of the "Electronic Workplace Policy" is the easiest way to skirt civil rights laws and due process (at least as little as "employees at will" have). If you just spend all day surfing the net, then you should be canned. But, if you hit a few sites now and again (which almost 100% of the workforce does, including managers who fire employees for this very thing), then you should not get canned, in my opinion. If your manager hates you, checking out (fill in the blank).com can get you fired since it is not technically a website related to your job. This managerial abuse is very widespread at LexisNexis.

**** Pay is stagnant. LexisNexis does pay pretty well, but practically zippo pay increases are not good for incentives.

***** Middle management is huge. In some areas of the company, middle management could be pared down by 75% and we'd all be better off. Having all this middle management leads to micro-managing everything. Remember, many LexisNexis managers are trained as lawyers, and they love to delve into meaningless minutiae. They think they are being clever, but they are only gluing up the works.

If you take a job at LexisNexis, be sure to keep a nest egg of money in reserve. Despite your performance, if your manager doesn't like you, you could be out the door before you know it. In my true opinion, it's not all bad - but it is now more bad than good for me. It's time to move on.

Oh, by the way, I've always had superior job performance evaluations. I'm not a disgruntled employee. I'm just no longer a good match for "Big Brother", aka LexisNexis. The management style chafes me, and that's why I'm looking elsewhere. Others really love the place. So, keep an open mind. This is my viewpoint.
