Why did the long term debt rise last quarter?

Here is the real question:
Why does ROP carry such a large debt load... seemingly forever?
This debt seems to be an attribute of nearly all older companies?
There is no reason these companies, like bloated in debt Americans, pay off the debt. Not now, but during "good times".

In Asia, companies in debt are considered plague investments.
