Without regard to what regulators might do with commodity etf and etn i am thinking 2009 is a good year to enter into ag commodities. The logic is weaker commodity prices and good crop yields might have farmers planting less. There has already been a cut back on fertilizer use and it might continue into 2010 so yields might come off. It would appear weather has more impact than fertilizer application at least this year. The back drop to all this is relentless population growth and demand growth. While we would all like cheap commodity prices the reality is an adequate return is needed for farmers to have incentive to produce. lower commodity prices might lead to less planting and less chemical use. My thinking is 2009 and early 2010 might be the time to get into ag stocks and ag commodities. Fertillizer stocks might not recover until late 2010. jmho.
