At nights, Mr. Rodell Vereen would sneak unto the Lazy B Stables in Horry County and have sex with the same horse - until her owner caught him.
Now for the second time in just over a year, Vereen has been convicted of having sex with the same horse, officials said.
Mr. Vereen, 50, was sentenced today to three years in prison on a charge of buggery, said 15th Circuit Assistant Solicitor Mr. Bo Bryan.
Mrs. Barbara Kenley knew there was something wrong when she kept finding things moved around in her barn and her horse Sugar had a vaginal infection.
"I went to the barn to feed my horses and he was there, laying in the hay," said Mrs. Kenley about the first time she caught Mr. Vereen in 2007. "It was obvious what he was there for."
In July 2008, Mr. Vereen pled guilty to buggery and was placed on three years probation.
Then, when she noticed the same pattern again, Mrs. Kenley, 59, of Little River, decided to install a surveillance camera in her barn.
On July 19, Mrs. Kenley caught Vereen in the act on video, Mr. Bryan said. Eight days later, Mrs. Kenley saw Vereen's car and caught him in the barn.
She held him at gun point with a shotgun until officers arrived on the scene, Mr. Bryan said.
Mr. Wayne Brennessel, head of the S.C. Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, said Mr. Vereen obviously has a mental health issue.
"I don't think he's doing it to be cruel," Mr. Brennessel said. "I think he's doing it because he has a mental issue."
During the trial, Mr. Vereen said he was sorry, Mr. Bryan said.
