After having slept on what was said during the CC yesterday, the above question came into my mind. Katz and Balsys would say virtually nothing about predicting third quarter profitability because of too many uncertainties.
Yet, regarding the biggest uncertainty of all--holiday sales--Katz was unhesitant about predicting that they would be higher than last year. How can you predict sales and have nothing to say about the prospects of profits?
Several weeks ago I wrote to PARL's senior management on just this point. I said that it is understandable that they couldn't predict sales very far into the future with this economy. But I requested that they tell the investment community and--especially--their own shareholders what levels of profits to expect ASSUMING certain levels of sales.
How hard would it be to predict profits if sales were assumed to be $170 per year going forward? Or $200 million? It wouldn't be hard at all unless you didn't know your business very well or were trying to hide certain cost factors from the public. I have yet to receive a reply from any of the three PARL executive to whom I wrote.
