Orion Energy Systems (OESX) makes efficient lighting systems. Specifically, the co specializes in high intensity fluorescent, or HIF, lighting systems that cut customers' electricity costs by 50%, while increasing their quantity of light by 50% and improving lighting quality. The co has installed its HIF lighting systems in over 2,100 facilities across North America.

· Of note, lighting accounts for 22% of electric power consumption in the US, with commercial and industrial lighting accounting for 65% of that amount. Commercial and industrial facilities employ a variety of lighting technologies, including HID (high intensity discharge), traditional fluorescent and incandescent lighting fixtures. Orion's HIF lighting systems typically replace HID fixtures, which operate inefficiently due to higher wattages and operating temperatures.

· An industry study indicates that 20.6 bln sq ft use HID fixtures. In most retrofit projects, customers typically realize a 2-3 year payback period on Orion's HIF lighting systems even without considering govt subsidies.
