CME Group's profit rises, but stock falls

CME Group reports 20 percent jump in 3rd-quarter profit, but results fail to impress investors

NEW YORK (AP) -- Exchange operator CME Group Inc. says its third-quarter profit increased 20 percent as cost-cutting and a smaller tax provision offset lower revenue and trading volume.

The derivatives, futures and options exchange operator based in Chicago says it earned $202 million, or $3.04 per share, in the third quarter. That's up from a profit of $168.7 million, or $2.81 per share, a year ago.

Excluding special items, CME Group earned $3.35 per share in the third quarter. That was 6 cents a share more than analysts were expecting.

It says revenue fell 4 percent to $650.4 million

Its shares are down 1.2 percent to $304.37 in midday trading.
