It is in the works for Medicare to eliminate consultation codes for physicians. Part of the requirment to code for a "consultation" is a communication back to the referring physician. The consulting physician is paid a higher fee for a "consultation" than for a "new patient" or "existing patient" office visit. Part of this increased fee is for the time to dictate and convey a message back to the referring physician. With this financial incentive to be eliminated, what percent of consulting physicians will continue to dictate letters knowing they will not get paid anything extra, but would have to take the time to dictate the letter and have to pay to have it transcribed and pay to send it? Could this have a significant impact on a company like MEDQ if there is a big decrease in dictations?
