Were it not for all this stupid government response to the collapse of the bubble, M&I and all the other banks and GSEs that screwed-the-pooch would be gone, on account of the fact that they are in reality certainly insolvent. The government's response will, in the long run, worsen matters. It is probably already happening, as evidenced by 10.2%/17+% real unemployment rate that far exceeds the worst-case-if-we-don't-approve-the-stimulus-package projections the administration made in support of the economic stimulus.

Take care investing in private sector firms, such as M&I and all the rest, supported by the government. The government, by it's nature, screws things up. Case in point is the government's having stuck it's finger in the residential housing market decades ago via FRE and FNM, said intervention and resultant imbalances and distortions, having played a key role in the bubble/collapse, now to cost future generations hundreds of billion$...
