Motorola and the potential      5-Nov-09 05:13 am
Rare that I offer my opinion in the tech sector, however, I own both RIMM and AAPL. I use a rather unscientific approach to new product launches, and there respective impact on share price. (at least for 1-2 quarters). I work in an environment where we employ several thousand younger team members, and I keep my ears open to what the buzz is regarding the smart phone market. Yes, our youth is now nearly completely, and solely interested in the smart phone. They too want to be "cool" and show off the latest technology.

An example would be when the storm was released by RIMM. It was to be the upgrade to the business community while offering "casual and cool new applications" to appeal to the younger demographic, and hopefully hinder the obvious dominance of the IPhone. So much build up into the sales dates and release. At this time the pps of RIMM was very low, and despite the frustrating user friendliness of this product, it drove the pps of RIMM strongly higher. I personally returned mine, as I am a user who prefers a physical qwerty key board. However the frenzy to have the latest CANNOT be underestimated, and from all I have been able to see of this new "Droid" product, it matches up to both of the market leaders in many ways.

A few other items to consider. Verizon is a great product partner, and has rarely agreed to a product that it did not move off the shelves quickly,(sellout) and continue to merchandise. Is the Droid an IPhone? Of course not. Is it the Blackberry Tour, again, same answer. What it is though, is the newest, reasonably functional, and Coolest handset to own.

Many cover the giants in this sector, but few cover the fallen, or smalller providers of this type of product. Verizon is not fallen, or small, and if the Droid just takes a very small piece of the RIMM and AAPL market share, this issue looks worth a bit of research.

May all your investment decisions be good ones.
