These old school casket industry insiders have far too relied upon the same ol' same ol'...and way too slow to change and reinvest in the future of the business. Casket sales are never going be a growth industry. Maybe a slight fluctuation with population variations, but the only way to grow is to capture more market share. There will still be a trend toward cremation and less expensive dispositions...but the days of the traditional casketed burial are over, and these people have not fully embraced that fact...time for some new ideas and fresh faces. Time to be a market maker, instead of being reactionary. If I were investing in Matthews, it certainly would not be because I had any hope that their casket business was going to grow in revenue or sales-ever. Unless they bought Aurora, Batesville will always be number one.
