I believe those posters who are confused on this issue are forgeting that it takes 3 business days for a stock transaction to settle. If the record date is Nov 6 then count backwards 3 business days and you arrive at Nov 3 for the last day to purchase or sell stock and effect the dividend. The next day is referred to as "Ex-dividend and simply means that transactions on or after Ex-dividend will not effect your reciept of that quarters dividend.
