Re: Glad i didn't buy before the ex-div date.      5-Nov-09 10:53 am
Edward;
You may be missing the point of the "wait until after x-div day to buy KMP" theory. This quarter, as in most quarters (see my earlier post) with KMP you would be better off waiting.

Here is an example.
You have $10k you want to invest in KMP.

ALTERNATIVE 1: buy before x-div day
for this example I will assume you buy at the average of the closing prices on the 5 days before the x-div date (10/28). Using the average 5-day price is trying not to "cook" the example too much by making it a "if you were PERFECT in your timing" example. The 5-day average pre-x-div day was $56.72

With your $10k, and assuming no commission, you could have bought 176 units, and have $17.28 left over in change.
Because you bought before the x-div date, you will get the distribution. That will pay you $184.80 (=176*$1.05)
So you end up with 176 units, $202.08 in cash (=$17.28+184.80), and a future tax liability from the postponed tax on your $184.80 distribution you received.

ALTERNATIVE 2: buy on or shortly after x-div day.
You buy at the average closing price on the x-div day or any of the next 4 days (5 days total, avg price = $54.31). The whole point is visible right here; the per-unit price has gone down by $2.41 while you forgo $1.05 in distribution.

You buy the same 176 units; total cost = $9,559.26
and you have $441.44 in change left over.

So in my example you end up with 176 units either way. With Alternative 1 (buy before), you have $202.08 in cash and a future tax liability, and with Alternative 2 (buy after) you have $441.44 in cash and no tax liability.

I suspect that someone doing a post-x-div purchase would actually use as much of their $10k as possible, so they would buy 184 units and have $6.96 in change. That would give them a permanently higher distribution cash flow in the future from those extra 8 units, but my example is more of an apples-to-apples comparison.
