S&P RAISES RECOMMENDATION ON SHARES OF JAMES RIVER COAL TO BUY FROM HOLD

JRCC reports Q3 EPS of $0.36 vs. a $0.86 loss, $0.03 ahead of estimate due to lower-than-expected production costs that offset somewhat lower pricing. We find positive JRCC's contracting in Q3, noting that Central Appalachian and Midwest contracts were written at a premium to current market spot rates. We maintain our shipment and pricing forecasts, but on revised production cost estimates raise our '09 EPS forecast by $0.09 to $2.61 and '10's by $0.17 to $2.79. We keep our $24 target price, but believe shares are attractive after falling nearly 10% in past two weeks
