A few days ago, Scott Harkonen, the former CEO of InterMune(ITMN Quote), was convicted of wire fraud for the creation and dissemination of false and misleading information about the efficacy of InterMune's drug Actimmune as a treatment for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.
Harkonen faces a maximum jail sentence of 20 years for his crimes. You can read about the case and the conviction by a jury in federal court in San Francisco here.
Much of this government's case rested on a press release about a pivotal clinical trial of Actimmune issued by InterMune under Harkonen's direction in August 2002. That study failed, yet Harkonen claimed Actimmune demonstrated a survival benefit. It didn't and now he's going to jail.
