But I feel it goes beyond "a weak economy." Even if unemployment was @ 6%, the credits offered to existing home buyers would encourage more people to put homes on the market. In reality this would even nullify the anticipated rise in house prices because of increased inventory surplus. In other words, giving credits to existing home dwellers would cause an increase to the number of homes for sale. More homes for sale would not help soak up foreclosure properties, and would actually dampen price increases. As far as helping consumer spending..again not really. People who buy a new home usually are going to hunker down for a while due to all the expenses. Then to compound matters many people like myself wish to wait until the credit game is over to get a true pricing perspective.
