I don't think many appreciate the dynamics of this company. We are a niche carrier - a one trick pony. Our fortunes directly tied to the underlying economy of Hawaii and visitor arrivals. I've said it before that Hawaii maintains sufficient allure on a global basis to sustain growth opportunities. In terms of growth and the momentum that permits us to seize it, well, I think HA is not executing. I continue to be bothered by Mark reporting that ALPA cost us a potential A330. This speaks to us not being able to capitalize on current opportunities in securing future growth opps. SAD...
Short-sightedness will cost us dearly. Look around us. It's clear as day! We operate in an environment of constant pressure and rely on good management to execute. In certain cases management's hands are tied. This lost opportunity to secure an additional 330 is an example of how their vision and plans are stifled. Hopefully not the start of a trend. Pressures will continue as other operators bolster transpac. This is all good for the overall Hawaii economy, but along with a stable or potentially growing economy comes HAs charter to grow market. We cannot do this well without flexibility. It is vital that everyone focus. Ponder, if you will, RJET. This company is evolving into something quite compelling. They will report their numbers this week and should reflect their Frontier acquisition. I like what is developing with them and their model. Interesting to see how it plays out. Why am I talking RJET? So they pull their ERJs out of Mokulele and ink a deal with Go! In essence Go! is given a breath of life, much to my chagrin. Now what? I am curious to see if RJET will redeploy the Q400s of Frontier/Lynx to Hawaii in the near term. Should listen to their CC this week to see if the CEO sheds some light on fleet adjustments. This would put pressure on us as the Q400 is far more efficient for this market than the CRJ. Again, mere speculation as I don't know ownership details of these Q400s and whether RJET would lease them to Go! or dissolve their 'merger' and opt to go solo Mokulele again? All of these pressures on both our operating segments! Typical of the industry as a whole. All our eggs in one lauhala basket. It's not a mandate that HA be Hawaii's flagship carrier. We have evolved in that regard and to sustain this title requires constant vigilance. This management team has executed a good plan. We have been fortunate in how our market share gains fell in our laps in recent years, but that should not diminish the fact that HA still executed. The momentum set and it was positive. I would like to see this continue with growth opportunities beyond our borders. Our fleet transition will afford us the flexibility to explore. I disagree with an analyst who was perplexed at HAs fleet transition in a mature market. He obviously doesn't see HA using this transition to grow beyond current markets. All of this can be squandered if forces try to keep things status quo. We, hell any airline, cannot survive status quo in this environment. Rating :
