Why I'm Long Helios Total Return Fund

Dont know if you guys read this or not, but very interesting.

Nov. 12th 2009 = I opened a new position yesterday: long Helios Total Return Fund (HTR).

This is a somewhat risky fund because more than 50% of it is invested in various mortgage backed securities. On the other hand, it pays more than 11% dividend, with monthly payments.

Over the last several days, HTR's price was going down, while the Net Asset Value (NAV) of the fund was going up a little bit. Currently the fund is valued at about a 9% discount.

My bet is that mortgage backed securities are currently undervalued and HTR is undervalued against the underlying assets. The high dividend doesn't hurt either.

I read through the letter to stockholders (p2-3 of the report), which very succinctly summarizes the fixed income market environment.

If one wants to tiptoe into a "recovery play" on the housing bubble fallout, this might be one to consider.

I'm still not clear on how they plan to preserve the NAV in the face of continued defaults, credit downgrades, etc.

I have owned this one for about three years and I am totally underwater even w/ the yield.

Mortgage backed securities are the last thing you want to own at this juncture.

Maybe their paper is OK but who is to know? Even the guys who wrote it don't know what it's worth.

I am thinking of selling and taking the hit.
