Just spent a few minutes with it, but here are my thoughts:
I wouldn't buy it, and don't think Garmin has to worry about this particular phone. It has a fast processor, nice screen (but didn't seem much better than iphone), and the Android operating system seems pretty good. The Google maps feature seems very good. The reason I am not impressed with the phone is as follows: 1. The dedicated keyboard is terrible. Bad decision. My iphone 3G screen keyboard is way better than that. Adding this keyboard makes the phone heavier, more subject to breakage if dropped, and bulkier. 2. It is heavy, and sort of boxy and ugly looking I think. It is heavy compared to iphone, and very heavy compared to nuvifone. Who wants to carry this weight?, what were they thinking? The one in the store was hot when I picked it up - maybe due to getting constant use from people trying it out, but it raises a flag. Will the battery explode on these when on the dash in the hot sun? The Android system seemed good though, and the phone is fast. Nice browser too. In general I think cell phones like this, even better ones without the dumb built-in keyboard, will not have a huge impact on PND sales. These phones are very pricey considering the data plan, and you basically throw them away when you get a new phone - that is like a double cost. It would help I think if Garmin marketed their products better. PNDs are way cheaper than smart phones. But having said that I love my iphone 3G and would not want to give it up. Garmin should try to get a G60 like dumb phone to market fast, while the opportunity is still there, assuming that is the carriers would allow this. If they won't support a dumb navigator phone then the FCC should take their licenses away... Rating :
