If you do not go more than 40 miles from home. Also, after 300 miles, the battery must be recharged from an electrical source. I occasionally make a 350 mile, one way trip. That leaves me out.

I think the Volt probably behaves like a Prius in the extended mode which means you can make as long a trip as you want because regenerative braking keeps the battery charged as well as the motor-generator. Just that you need to purchase fuel.
For those who would drive short return trips of less than 40 miles per day, electric mode, they would purchase very little fuel if they recharged each night. thanks earthnews Rating :

Not according to the reports that I have heard on CNBC, including Phil Labeau, who is their outo expert.

"And electric for recharging is free right ?"
That's about the ONLY thing that's good about it. The recharging cost WILL be low, for what it's worth. Rating :

At 40K MSRP, where's the savings? Besides, my commute is 70 miles per day.

Did you know the manufacturing of a Toyota Prius and recycling of the battery create more of a problem than driving around in your old Ford? Rating :

If it's not about saving money, then I double the general public will accept it. One of the reason that people buy Prius is it's promise to save money over the years.

This part as you mention isn't entirely clear but by deduction the fact that the car will run on the engine-generator in 'extended mode' means that the engineers could also charge the battery with the engine as well. Also there is regenerative braking to charge the battery also.
You are right that GM needs to make the point clear as to whether a customer could continue driving the car without ever charging the battery off an outlet, but I think they could just from the way they describe the engineering of the car. Thanks Rating :

My laptop computer can not run the number of hours on battery as the manufacture claims. And it run out quickly over the years. My cell phone battery dry out over the years. They make a lot of money by selling replacement batteries. Some are cheap, but not last long, Some last long, but cost a lot of money. You do have a choice here.

Toyota Prius battery warranty is 15 years/150,000 miles, or 10 years/150,000 miles. So after 10/15 years and 150,000 miles, what's the residual value of the Prius? Compared with other non-hybrid cars.

$750 per KWHR min.
$7,000 Per KWHR top end. That puts the Battery between 12,000 and 112,000 http://www.examiner.com/x-5908-Boston-En... Rating :

Good questions. I suspect the battery is not efficient enough for both extremes. GM will probably face lawsuits from people stuck in snow storms and froze to death.

There are some negative comments on the board, but for Ford and GM it is good that with cars like the Chevrolet Volt they are making great progress on advanced technology vehicles
