"Although colonoscopy may be considered the "gold standard" for colorectal cancer screening, it requires a skilled examiner, involves greater cost, and is less convenient to the patient. As such, a population-based colorectal cancer screening program based on colonoscopy is more resource-intensive and less feasible in most countries, and not at all practical in low-resource countries."

"In the United States, current screening recommendations for the detection of adenomatous polyps and colorectal cancer in adults with average risk (thoseaged 50 years and older) include either annual stool testing with a high-sensitivity guaiac- or immunochemical-based test, periodic stool DNA testing, flexible sigmoidoscopy every 5 years, colonoscopy every 10 years, double-contrast barium enema every 5 years, or computed tomographic colonography every 5 years"
