Oh, it's worse than that.

To change a small mixing pump a mechanic (who had the skills to do the entire job himself) finally shows up and he determines an electrician is needed to disconnect 3 wires so he calls his boss (who is in a meeting) and after 30 minutes tells him the situation. The boss calls for an electrician (that is now at lunch) and after an hour he shows up only to find out an "insulator" person is needed to remove 9" of insulation so they can get to the wires to get disconnected so the mechanic can change out the small mixing pump. Meanwhile the mechanic is called to another job around 2:00 PM and doesn't come back to the job until 3:30 and finally takes out the pump and leaves it to 2nd shift to install the new one which they now can't find because of the lack of communication between 1st and 2nd shift. All the while production is stopped for an entire shift with production employees standing around doing nothing but bitching at the trades people because they get paid more for the circus they just witnessed. Moral goes down the tube, production isn't met, customers eventually get pissed and start buying from another more responsive supplier (from Japan in the case of the nylon business) and eventually the business tanks and they sell the business.

No, the business wasn't sold because of this one event but after a series of events just like this over many years PLUS several boneheaded business decisions as well as stupid government policies and rules - the business IS sold. Had it been just one or two bad things, the business would have been OK but everything simply killed the golded goose.

My point is business is hard enough to maintain and be profitable if everything goes right. Things have to get invented, manufactured economically, safely and responsibly, delivered promptly at an acceptable price to have a chance of success. Throwing in a 10 hour effort to do a one hour job is just insane and contributes to higher costs, lower customer satisfaction and provides a significant opportunity for another company to prosper.

In a world where lowest production costs are the key to success, we better be about figuring how to do that vs "playing games".
