WASHINGTON (Marketwatch) - Orders for U.S. manufactured goods increased 0.9% in September in machinery, autos, defense goods, and chemicals, the Commerce Department said. Factory orders have risen in five of the past six months. September's gain was stronger than expected. Orders for durables increased an upwardly revised 1.4% and nondurable goods increased 0.6%. Inventories fell 1% the 13th consecutive time.

Manufacturing and Housing Surge November 2, 2009
The Institute for Supply Management index grew at the fastest pace in October since April 2006. The ISM index of 55.7 is much better than economists expected. It was the third month above 50 which indicates growth.

The National Association of Realtors said pending home sales increased for the eighth month in September. It was the highest since December 2006 and more than 21 percent above a year ago.

Chicago Purchasers’ Index Climbs to 13-Month High

Oct. 30 (Bloomberg) -- Business activity in the U.S. expanded in October, a sign the economic recovery will persist in the coming months. The ISM-Chicago Inc.barometer increased to 54.2 the highest in 13 months and exceeding the forecast of economists.
Companies are gearing up to meet demand. “Many firms see brighter prospects,” Guy LeBas, chief fixed-income economist at Janney Montgomery Scott LLC. “The domestic economy is in recovery.”
