Probably not too optimistic to expect that Q2 metrics will meet low bar set by analysts relying on subdued tone and limited guidance articulated by management in Q1 conference call. The 4 analysts who provided earnings estimates for Q2 are situated within a .01 range from -.14 to -.13. Even the slightest improvement over Q1 SSS should push earnings past these numbers. Moreover, as we all know, Q2 marks the beginning of easier comps. The big question, as is always the case in the stock picking game, where are expectations? What are the real expectations for Q2 (not the 4 dumb parrots with their -.14 to -.13 estimates) and, more importantly, what are the real expectations for CBK going forward? The stock price is approx. 40% higher than it was on the eve of the Q1 report. Will Ms. Nagler and associates report a performance and/or guidance that is 40% better than Q1 results and call? I hope so. As pleased as I am with current management's carefully crafted product-market strategy evident in the stores and on the website along with the serious and comprehensive cost-cutting strategy which may provide significant operating leverage for an indefinite period, the 40% price move may be all we can ask for under present macro conditions. At least, 40% is all we can ask for until 2010 job market improvement expectations begin to dribble into the mainstream financial press.
