Another partial truth is that much of the "investment" in the US is in Treasuries and mortgages, traditionally low yielding investments. While US investments abroad have focused on equities (either by building branch factories or buying shares in foreign companies).

Traditionally, debt yields less than equities, and equities in developing nations yield more (if you can stomach the ride) than equities in developed nations. Americans invest in Brazilian companies, or set up a branch there, while the Chinese buy T-Bills. Relatively easy for $1 billion in a Brazilian company to generate as much investment income as $3 billion in 90 Day T-Bills.

So finding equivalent investment income does not imply equivalent investment capital.
