Workers at McDonald's manufacture hamburgers. It is a matter of definition. The definition of "manufacturing" has been broadened significantly and this has increase3d manufacturing, at least on paper.

Reality is a massive loss in what is commonly considered to be manufacturing, which has just recently begone to turn around.

I am looking for a new washing machine. Maytag > Mexico & China 4 years ago. Staber (family owned business in Ohio, mainly sales to laundromats but will sell me one w/o coin machine) and Bosch (since last August in NC, most energy efficient on market) make washing machines in the USA. GE will start making high end ones in Louisville again soon.

Only one firm left that makes eyeglass frames in USA.

Baldwin had generations of craftsmen in Reading PA. Black & Decker bought them 4 years ago, fired all US staff and moved everything to China. High end, once premium quality brass products. Black & Decker is now milking their name.

See flu vaccine. This is high end, STRICT quality control manufacturing. One US source, the other 5 are imported.

A Swiss company, Roche, has just started advertising that they are the only Made in USA source of diabetic testers and strips. A rapidly growing market BTW.
