R&D is at the heart of any medical device company. BSX doesn't have R&D, they like to buy it instead. They bought Taxus from Angiotech, they bought other stent and balloon technology from Pfizer/Schnieder and Scimed, neuromodulation from Al Mann, and ICD/pacing from Guidant. Now the problem is that they're broke from maxing out the credit cards on buying Guidant, and revenue growth has stagnated. BSX is hoping to refinance $3.8 billion in loan payments coming up, but that still doesn't address the flawed business strategy of shopping, maxing out the credit card, and then using one credit card to pay off the other. This is one big reason why this stock is in the toilet. Meanwhile, the technology they currently have is outdated, and they still have quality problems with the FDA warning letter in place. When BSX tries to launch a new product, it is usually a disaster like Cognis and Teligen were total disasters with the header and set-screw problems. Exec. Management doesn't care about the company, only their "performance" bonuses, so BSX shareholders (owners) are basically stuck in quicksand.
