In the prosecution of the '705 patent, Heim said, Burst had to distinguish its claims from that of the Baldwin patent. Baldwin, he said, was "a flavor of TCM, not data compression. The claims were amended to show (the Burst) CLAIM ORDER: reception of A/V source information, compression, storage, and transmission. In that order." NOTE: The FTRT speed comes at the very end of these four stages, when the compressed A/V data, that has been stored, is then transmitted over a comm. link.
Next, he explained again, as Dr. Hemami had done the prior week, how multiplexing works, where and how the "time compression" occurs in this technology, and the ORDER in which the functions take place. (To refresh your memory, Dr. Hemami explained Time Compression Multiplexing (TCM) with the example of two people transmitting (speaking over the phone) at the same time. She used Apple's own diagram in their brief! Two signals-channels at 10 Mbps, STORED in a buffer (memory), then CLOCKED OUT at a faster speed (say 2X), then "burst transmitted" from me to you, as phone users, communicating in real time. Heim said when the signals get "clocked out" at 2X speed, they get "stuffed together," or interleaved ("multiplexed"), into the same wire for a period of time that has a definite and known duration. By clocking the two signals out faster, they are able to share the same transmission line (telephone line), but their speed remains the same -- real time transmission. Also of note is the fact that there is no data compression done in the process. The bits of the signal data have not been reduced at all. Only the frequency of the signal changes, for a time, to be multiplexed (interleafed, or stuffed together with the other signal) for transmission. (TCM does not contemplate, and does not do FTRT transmission.) Back to the ORDER. Mike Heim was fired up! And I know why. Just now I reviewed my tutorial notes again, and I recalled Powers' EMPHATIC PRONOUNCEMENT right at the end of his tutorial. (Funny how he drops these bombs right at the last moment, where there's no chance for rebuttal.) << Apple VIOLENTLY disagrees with Burst (Dr. Hemami) that TCM needs to be stored before compression. We'll argue that next week, I guess. >> (Emphasis HIS!) So Heim, the guy with "BSEE" after his name, responded to Powers (JD only): "The Burst claim order is receive, compress, store, transmit. Apple's (TCM) order is different: receive, store (buffer), compress (clocking signal out faster). (Shown in Apple's own diagram!) Hello! Then he REALLY opened up his guns on Powers: "It doesn't make any sense, your honor! That's the reason their argument is just WRONG! If you do TCM compression first, then storage, YOU'VE LOST THE TCM COMPRESSION." Hello! And he's right, of course. You don't need a technical degree to understand this. Once the signal is clocked up in frequency, you'd better transmit it right away, at that higher speed. If you then store it, it's back to its original frequency. It's the clocking out at a higher frequency, that causes the TCM (frequency) compression. Rating :
