I am not a malaria expert. However, I did study malaria in a college course in Parasitology.

I don't remember any information on malaria running it's fatal course in <30 days nor having a 100% fatality rate.

Given a family unit is not a sufficient sample size it is possible that all four may have died, but even the most virulent P. falciparum infections usually allowed the victims to survive more than a year at a minimum from the onset of first symptoms. Often the 50% fatality rate was wasn't achieved until the 2.5 - 3 year timeframe. Other, less virulent strains, had a significantly lower fatality rate and a significantly longer timeframe until the onset of death...say from 3 to 20 years.

So I am a bit skeptical about this story. Do you have more specific information than what you stated?
