Innumeracy is a huge problem...      4-Nov-09 10:08 am
especially among economists. It was announced that car sales were up (good thing) in a SAAR rate of 10.2 million.

But what was ignored was the price of gasoline. This year, the US will spend 3X more on gasoline than we spend on new cars. Obviously, it's more important that gas is cheap than cars are sold.

In the cash for clunkers program, people sold minivans and bought KIA SUV's. How is this good for the economy? KIA sold these trucks at HUGE discounts to get market share.

AS we speak, the US spends 5% of gdp on gasoline. If oil were to spike and gasoline went back to $4.00 retail, we'd be spending $1 trillion on gas. Gas represents only 21% of US energy use.

If Coal and Natty were to follow suit, we would be, as we were last year, spending 150% of discretionary income on energy. This is why credit card spending went banana's and now 1/5th of the nation is in default.

Can't these clowns see this? Can they be that stupid?
