The reason to invest in GNMA is to get the protection of a government guarantee on the principal of the mortgage loan. In the event of a default (foreclosure) the govenment will make the mortgage holder whole by paying the principal, but not any outstanding interest. That is one of the main reasons to buy and hold GNMA as part of the fixed income sector of your portfolio.
