Re: VIMSX vs. S&P 400 Midcap Index

VIMSX tracks the MSCI US Mid Cap 450 Index, which has a larger median market cap than the S&P 400, meaning that it is slightly skewed towards the large end of the mid cap spectrum. The larger market cap stocks in the MSCI Mid Cap 450 Index overlap slightly with the large cap S&P 500. Therefore, when large cap stocks outperform, VIMSX will outperform the S&P 400. When small cap stocks outperform, VIMSX will underperform the S&P 400.

Vanguard's Large Cap Index fund tracks the MSCI Large Cap Index, the Mid Cap Index (VIMSX) tracks the MSCI Mid Cap Index, and the Small Cap Index tracks the MSCI Small Cap Index.

Vanguard's 500 Index (VFINX) tracks the S&P 500, and Vanguard's Tax Managed Small Cap Fund (VTMSX) tracks the S&P 600 Small Cap Index. Vanguard does not have a fund that tracks the S&P 400 Mid Cap Index, but this index is tracked by the iShares Mid Cap ETF (IJH).

VIMSX vs. S&P 400 Midcap Index

I know this fund is based on Vanguard's own MidCap index and the Vanguard ETF, VO. But why does this fund so miserably underperform the S&P 400 MidCap index and its ETF, MDY?? Each of the seven months this year, Vanguard's MidCap index significantly underperformed MDY. You would think it would be, at the least, close, but it's not near being close. I hold some VMISX in a 401K, which is Vanguard's "signal" variance (lower fees) of VIMSX. YTD, VMISX is down 11.47% while MDY is down just 5.28%. That's a big difference for both being a MidCap index fund/ETF. MidCaps have been outperforming this year, but Vanguard's MidCaps are doing no better than the LargeCap indexes YTD.

Month-by-month VMISX vs MDY:

Month, VMISX, MDY

Jan -6.54% -6.00%
Feb -2.27% -1.06%
Mar -2.07% -1.86%
Apr +6.75% +7.92%
May +4.41% +5.44%
Jun -7.61% -7.10%
Jul -3.92% -1.82%

The fund holds 9,367,418 shares...as of January '07
Purchased at a much higher price than there current ask.

I think they were caught just like me , all the hype is fading on this one , maybe the merger will get them, me back to even.. I've been holding 3000 myself way too long :(

This is a very good fund have had it for 4 years
