I am in the process of rolling over my IRA to Vanguard. The CD at the bank is getting a lousy 0.85% interest. I like Vanguard because the fees are low. When I was setting up my Vanguard IRA online, I wasn't sure which fund to pick. I picked VBINX because it has a 60% stock / 40% bond mix. It seems like a fairly safe place to park my money for now. It looks like I can expect at least 2% per year in distributions and dividends. That's more than double what my bank is paying in interest.

Then I started looking at the other Vanguard funds. VBINX doesn't have any international holdings. Now I'm considering switching to VSCGX, VTWNX or VTTVX. These other 3 funds have lower fees too. Any comments?

One of the biggest differences between VBINX an VWELX is that the latter seems to invest in a somewhat riskier bond portfolio than VBINX, which seems to stick pretty much to bonds rated A & above.

You're also comparing apples to oranges. VBINX is an index fund, as opposed to the active management of Wellington. It is essentially a 60/40 split between the entire US stock market and the entire US bond market. It is really meant to be a core holding in a diverse ETF portfolio, which if properly assembled can outperform Wellington. But I hear you, I like Wellington.

Ditto.. Vanguard Balanced fund have seen better days for past 10 yrs and counting.. They are handicapped and can't move around as much.. My Port ( FPACX,OAKBX,PRPFX,PRWCX and CGMRX with FAIRX) has done the best in past 10,8,5yrs and YTD? It's down only -1.5% YTD.

Happy camper ( again)..

Interesting information. I had noticed the slightly greater resilence in VBINX, but it doesn't seem all that important percentage wise (at least to me, investing is subjective). Couldn't have told you why until I read your message so thanks.
I just bought another chunk of Wellington a few days ago, which doesn't do me any good now, but will later on.

VBINX has and will continue to slowly gain over Wellington for the next year or two because of better quality bonds. The bond portion of a balanced fund is just as important as the stock portion. For example, compare two highly regarded bond funds over the last six months: Dodge and Cox Income (DODIX) and Harbor Bond (HABDX). There is no comparison. Wellington has more risk in its lower quality bonds which pay better rewards in good times but may cost you in these times.

I owned Wellington and Star up until August, when a recession looked like a real possibility. Then went all Balanced Index. I prefer Wellington and Star in good times, but Balanced is best in a bear market. Just compare them from 1999 - 2002. Why is Balanced better, because it has treasury bonds which really jump in a bear market. For the coming 2008-2010 bear market with the subprime bond mess, I'll stick with VBINX treasury bonds. When this mess is over and I trust bonds again, then back to Wellington, a great 5-Star fund. Just my 2-cents.

Thanks for the message. I am not an expert; I just read expert sources!

I went back and re-checked the sources. Here is what I found:

I checked Valueline just now and here is what they say about the performance during what they call the last bull market, September 2002 - October 2007.
VWELX: +93.2%. average annual 13.3%
VBINX: +74%. average annual 10.8%

Also,I checked money.msn.com and clicked on average annual returns. It has VWELX beating VBINX every year of the last 5 year bull market.

I guess I am focusing on the last bull market. VBINX is a good fund, I just wanted a little extra return. I'm guessing VWELX does a little better because it can go as low as 30% bonds, according to the prospectus.

Sometimes the age of the fund and the size of the fund can skew those percentage returns charts.

I did chart comparisons for VBINX and VWELX on yahoo and they differ with your statement. For the most part they are equal but since 1998 VBINX has outperformed. Am I missing something? I am currently adding to positions in VBINX but was considering the switch.

I used to own VBINX, but recently compared its performance to Vanguard Wellington, another balanced asset alloation fund. I have since moved over to Wellington.
VBINX has inferior growth: check the performances of these two funds during the last bull market (2003-2007). My sources say Wellington did 2% per annum better.
Plus, check out some of the moves recently where Wellington gains and VBINX loses. Over time, this will cost you thousands.
I love Vanguard and balanced allocation funds, but VBINX ain't it.
