"Seems like poor communication between the fund and its shareholders since you, me and probably a million others had collective heart failure after seeing the dramatic drop in the fund price. . . "

I actually find that quite funny, since anyone who should be investing in mutual funds should know this *before* they invest, and should have read the prospectus (which probably says this).

I find it typical of the "average American" these days, too lazy to actually do research before investing. @#$%, I had a woman asking me a while back what I thought of her IRA investment (through a broker) - a high-yield bond fund with a 4.5% front end load (you lost 4.5% as soon as they got the check - take a year to make that up), like 2.5% in management fees... to me, a bad choice.. to her, as I tried to explain why, "I don't really want to know, or learn, its too complicated".

Lots of funds distibute capital gains at this time of the year - you'll get confirmation of the transaction in the mail, usually before the end of the year. What makes me mad is that the graph on yahoo and some other sources show it going down - which is a myth - because if there is virtually no change in value - the graph should compensate for those distributions. Instead - at about the same time every year, the graph takes this huge dip. Same thing happens to the Value Line Fund - a five year graph always shows a big crash in December. You can't depend on the some of reasearch on yahoo if they don't compensate for those distributions. On individual stocks, when they split, they always seem to compensate for that, but when it comes to a fund - they don't. Oh well.

I contacted Vanguard yesterday (after wondering the same thing). Their response was that the fund was realizing/distributing capital gains and dividends to the shareholders. Since this involves a distribution of assets out of the fund, the share price went down, but you'll see your number of shares went up something like 13%. Like a stock split, your net asset position should be basically unchanged.
