If a mutual fund distributes capital gains and dividends to holders of the fund, the Net Asset Value of the fund will go down. The dividends from the various stocks in the fund are not paid to the fund on the same date but are spread across the year. So the fund holds the dividends in the fund and the NAV goes up until the fund distributes the dividends to the fund holders and the NAV goes down. But the fund holders now have the dividends either paid to them or re-invested in fund shares. As the fund sells stocks in the fund over time, gains and losses occur, and usually the gains exceed the losses. Just like the dividends the gains over time increase the NAV, and then the distribution of the gains lowers the NAV. Most funds distribute dividends and gains to fund holders together at the same time twice a year, and this drop in NAV occurs then. That is why mutual funds need to be tracked over years not months.
