it seems this manager is very patient. The fund is rated highly as a lower risk fund with "average" returns.

Looking at the portfolio, the manager invests in value type stocks with a major weighting in tobacco.

I think the tobacco investments are too large because there is always an inherent risk of litigation/taxation. However, this manager loves companies that make consistent profits. The reality is that tobacco stocks have outperformed the market over the last 5 or 10 years. and Phillip Morris, when accounting for dividend reinvestment, is the best performing stock in the S&P over the last 50+ years.

this portfolio will not jump in spurts and will underperform in an early stage market turn around. However, there are many worse funds out there, particularly if you care as much about investmnet protection as well as investment returns.

Do you know anything about the change to Virtus? I also have held for years (initially bought at J@#$%.) It looks to me that I am doing as well with my HAINX with lower fees, so am thinking of selling JVIAX and adding to HAINX. Just to tidy up the number of funds. I have FDIVX in 401k and it is doing well in 2009 (although JVIAX beat in last few years). Also, I noticed HAINX and FDIVX outperformed JVIAX by 10 percentage points in 2003--coming out of last recession. Of course, this doesn't mean they will outperform again.

I attended a session with Peter Newell this week about international investing. He claimed he was with JVIAX, although I see no evidence of his presence or role/title in the fund prospectus. Anyone know what he does there?

Interesting that I asked his regional sales guy the identifier for the fund and he answered "VRTS".

Both funds took quite a hit this week, first time a broker invites me to listen to a pitch about a fund that the next day drops 13%.

Anybody have any news or opinions on VRTS and JVIAX?
