Vanguard is a classy business. They stick to doing business the way they promise to do business. They don't go chasing the bubble like others such as PIMCO. I'm glad to be with Vanguard, since they truly are looking out for the good of a long term investor who is not looking to make a buck by day trading or moving in and out of stocks and bonds very often and trying to beat the market. The Vanguard is trying to make sure they are helping thier clients achieve their long term investment goals because they know this is the only very smart way to invest.

Vanguard closes VCVLX 9-Oct-09 06:47 pm
Makes it better for those of us who are already in.

"On the heels of Vanguard's warning about the dangers of chasing hot performance, the firm has closed one of its best performers: Vanguard Capital Value (NASDAQ:VCVLX - News). Vanguard says the large-blend offering currently has $742 million in assets, which is 3 times the size it was at the end of February, due to both inflows and stock appreciation. Capital Value is the category's top-performing fund for the year to date and trailing 12 months. The fund's fierce comeback is welcome following its poor relative performance in 2007 and 2008 when it trailed 95% and 97% of its peers, respectively. Stemming inflows is an important step toward ensuring that manager Peter Higgins, who took over in June 2008, can effectively execute his bold contrarian approach.

Vanguard CEO Bill McNabb noted that closing Vanguard Capital Value serves two key purposes: Current shareholders won't have to bear the added costs generated by short-term investors moving in and out of the fund, and performance-chasing investors are protected from themselves. Vanguard has instituted these "cooling off" periods a few times in the past, reopening the funds once investor interest subsided."

Does anyone have an opionion on this fund? It has obviously done great this year. The big question on this fund is whether it can post sustainable gains for consecutive years. I have held this fund since 2005 and plan on holding it through 2010. I want to give this fund five to six years. i figure i'll need the money at the end of 2010. any thoughts?

Lots of the names loaded with leverage, debt, off balance sheet entities, illiquid assets, pension obligations, and on and on
I guess I had a different view of what value investing is...a few different metrics that are simple ABCs, such as Enterprise Value = market cap + debt + obligations - cash. Then do ratio of EV to GAAP cash flow and find some companies worth picking. 50% of the holdings were absolutely not undervalued on that criteria, on top of being plain bad picks. Don't they know this stuff?

Is there any justice in life when you see the sort of knuckleheads that have sweet jobs?

Anyway, they changed the fund manager 4 months ago by the looks of it, and I'll be interested to see what the 09/30/08 holdings look like.

Ditto. Thankfully I got out before today's huge 7% drop. Sadly though I've lost money being in this fund over the last six years.

It wasn't the volatility or performance that made me leave. It was going into the portfolio holdings and being absolutely shocked at what this thing holds:

Ford
Wamu
Fannie
Freddie
Countrywide
Lehman Brothers
Northwest Airlines
United Airlines
Citigroup

https://personal.vanguard.com/us/FundsAllHoldings?FundId=0328&FundIntExt=INT&tableName=Equity&tableIndex=0

If someone came up to me and asked me to name the companies I thought were most likely to go bankrupt in the next two years, I'd just hand them the VCVLX portfolio holdings! It's pretty well known that if accounting were being performed honestly all the above companies would be insolvent. Yeah they might escape and soar in price, but to make that pick takes no investment research. That's just gambling on a treasury or congressional bailout.

I expect value funds to find value, not speculate on a companies likelihood for dodging bankruptcy. I'm done with mutual funds and their incompetent managers (I was in OAKLX too). It was an expensive lesson, but now I'm in simple index funds targeted at my retirement date.
