Re: Feeling Good About VEIPX for 2008

I've been in VEIPX for over 5-years. My purchase price has fluctuated between $17-27 through the years.

Right now, my 1-3 yr. are nothing to get excited about. However, my 5-year return is averaging slightly above 11%, so it's not too bad considering the expense ratio averages 0.29%.

VEIPX makes up about 18% of my portfolio. My goal for 2Q08 is to stay the course, and maybe increase my overall position to somewhere between 19-20%.

In tough times, I feel a lot safer with large caps, especially those with high yields, and even with the subprime banking collapse, this fund has been a relatively safe fund to do just that.

Then again, I'm starting to feel confident that we've hit the bottoms on many of these funds, so I'm starting to get aggressive with my small and mid cap funds again for 2Q08.

I am not too concerned with a possible recession. At this point, I have reallocated my portfolio for 2008 and am bearish on small caps and bullish on VEIPX.....mostly because it is large cap and likely to weather any bad financial storms. I also like the dividends, and appreciate the low expense ratio.

Sure it has some large financial equities like C, BAC and JPM, all which are in the red, but as a long-term play, these will certainly recover as well.

After the capital gains and dividend distribution in December, the NAV has not really rallied, but I feel very confident that VEIPX will see a nice pop in the later part of this year.

In the meantime, I will continue to average down and increase my position until I begin seeing a recovery, at which point, I'll reevaluate my contributions to this fund.
