This fund is going to the moon--I just sold--minus 1.6% for 17 months. I am so relieved to be rid of this.

Why is this happening? Well, I obviously bought high. Feb 28, 2008, to be exact. This fund fluttered around until late September, never going up over $2000, or down over $3000 from my original $150k investment.(I track investments weekly) By the end of October, I was down to $132k-nearly an 18k loss. If you bought then-yeah, it looks like a winner.
I lost several hundred thousand in equities and bonds in the last 18months. Although this 11.5% drop is small potatoes relative to my losses elsewhere, I did not expect this fund to pile on. It did pile on, and as such is no good to me as a stabilizer. My experience with this indicates that it is a speculative fund. Speculate away, but I'm going back to the no-percent money market funds, thanks anyway. Good luck.

How about just plain, do not invest in this fund? I'm pushing 18 months on this "investment", and with reinvested dividends, I still haven't broken even.

This fund seems to be more volatile than other government bond funds. All on the downside, of course. Today the stock market is tanking, and the ishares TIPs ETF is down 1%, so people are sure not fleeing to safety in TIPs. I track this ETF so that I have a good idea when to pull the trigger(sell) on this fund. Every time it gets within a couple of percent of my investment, I plan on taking my loss. Then I wait another day, and this fund disappoints.

TIPs may be a good idea for an investment, but not in a fund or ETF. I'll be very happy when this fund is in my rear view mirror.

What are you talking about? What exactly would my motivation have to do with the returns, i.e. "right reasons".

I invested in this fund to make money. Is there some other reason to invest? I accepted the trade-off of a modest return for some safety of principle. Gee, no agency debt, 6% yield, yada, yada. Don't worry about day to day share price, blah, blah.

The fund is in a retirement account, interest reinvested, so no tax worries.

This isn't about share price, this is about my fund balance. 150k in February has become less than 135k. Worse, it was a little under 151k Mid-September, and by the end of October it was around 133k. Pretty big crash for a "safe" fund. So when am I going to break even?

A lot of people look at this fund, like me, and think, Oh, a safe government fund that will keep up with inflation. Well, this is what can happen. Just a warning.

How about 6% yield. For a treasury investment with no agency debt. Assuming you invested in this for the right reasons, you should take solace in knowing you are being compensated for market value by yield.
I got into this fund and it has gone down since then. One of my usual problems. Buy high, sell low. Looking at the yahoo chart, it looks like it will be a few years until it is where I bought it at. However, you don't lose money until you sell. Look at it this way, in the past 50 years, there has never been a year where there was not inflation. Unfortunately, our government lies to us on the CPI so we will never get a fair shake. Example: last CPI report where the Labor Department said that energy actually went down 2 percent. I emailed them and asked what gasoline station they were buying their gas at. They never did reply, even though I, as a taxpayer am paying their salary.

TIPS provide Inflation protection and can loose value. "An investment in the Fund could lose money over short or even long periods." from page 1 of the prospectus. Unfortunately it sounds like you learned that the hard way.

Below is a link from the Bogleheads Reference Library on Bonds that may help you:
http://www.diehards.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=290&sid=ed961b77f07fdd0a2c8eb36c225c1678

And here's another bond related article, about the need to preserve capital:

I just moved my money from Vanguard's money market account to this TIPS fund because I was concerned about inflation. In the week I've held this TIPS account, I lost 1.5% That's 1.5% in a single week!

Is this unusual or a sign that this fund is going down? I thought if you held on to TIPS you couldn't lose principle.

These dividends are based on the inflation (CPI) which was quite low in the last qtr of 06. The way things are going now..... look for them to more than make up the difference this year...
