Good for you. You have got an extra 1/2 percent so far. It is very hard to catch the exact bottom or the exact top of anything, but capturing a 50% move is a very good thing and I am well satisfied with this funds performance. Just needed to buy some other things that I feel will move more than this since it has already had a nice run. With interest rates at zero there isn't much room for them to go anywhere but up and once they start it will be like Chinese water torture. Don't stay too long!

I guess they were glad to give you your money, since it has reached a new high. This made up 30% of my portfolio, but have scaled back to 20%, I like the MLP Master Limited Partnership exposure that they have. I still think it has some room to run. They have done an excellent job of moving assets around. I am still adding monthly to this though, but I saw something I had to buy and needed money to do so.

Well I have received almost a 50% gain in this fund while collecting a massive dividend, it has been a nice place to park my money!
But with the Fed maybe making a little noise about interest rates in their next meeting (though I doubt they will do anything to the rate it's self), I am going to take a break. Maybe I'm early, but better safe than sorry. Hope my removing some major cash does not push this puppy down on my last day here.

Good luck to you all, but look for a seat before the music stops!

I thought this would run up close to the Pre Lehman levels before years end, but didn't think it would do so as quick as it has. I don't know if this fund can ever get back to the 9.00 level are not. I don't know, if any corporations within this fund filled for bankruptcy are not. It looks as if MR. Fuend from USAA has done a nice job of buying bonds. I think as long as he remains the fund manager I will continue holding on to this position. Any other thoughts or opinions?

exactly, this is why well diversified high yield and even investment grade bond funds are doing great in June---we get some of the upside but miss most of the downside in these quick moves in the stock market. And, at the end of the month we pick up 1% in dividends. 1% a month in the stock market for a whole year is a good year. After the high yield sell off late last year, the yields and plus appreciation potential give us equity like returns with great income.

In other words; there’s an avalanche of defaults coming our way in the high-yield sector – assuming the economy isn’t in a new bull market. And historically, you never buy junk bonds when the default rate is still rising; still, as default rates have climbed markedly recently junk bond prices have soared. Something is wrong with this picture

Not quite sure what you are asking:

A. USAA does not have a "Mutual Bond Fund"
B. USGMA is not a valid identifier for any Mutual Fund
C. Use this URL to see all USAA Mutual Funds

Having said that, although I have been a very satisfied USAA member for over 44 years, and I (along with Lipper, Morningstar, etc) rate USAA as a very, very superior company, I hesitate to offer financial advice here for individual investments.

Hope You understand

I certainly am fully cognizant and fully understand the difference between what bondholders get and what stockholders get in Corporate bankruptcies.

However, from the wording of your reply, I must wonder if you realize how close to "nothing" Junk bondholders may receive if upcoming bankruptcy predictions are accurate.

Consider this recent Bloomberg article: April 23, 2009:
The looming wave of bankruptcies is unlikely to be kind to bondholders. And they have only themselves to blame.

Rather than receiving the historical average recovery of 42 cents on the dollar in a default, owners of a third of high- yield, high-risk bonds rated B+ or lower may get no more than 10 cents, according to New York-based Fitch Ratings. About 22 percent are likely to get 11 cents to 30 cents.

http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=ah5Lg9TW9B_M&refer=home

There are several reputable similar analysis available online.

Again, I share your optimism, but am definitely ready to take alternative options if forecast defaults start affecting Net Asset Value of UHYX

Best Regards to you

I personally share your optimism.

However, I am keeping a close eye on defaults, and trust our Manager Mr. Freund keeps USHYX below the current and forcast industry average.

A recent Reuters Article on High Yield Bonds:

Given the difficult credit environment, rising default rates, and expected lower recoveries, many investors are waiting for signs as to when defaults will peak. Unfortunately, the trend still points in the other direction. Looking at credit quality, the Moody’s U.S. speculative-grade default rate rose to 7.45% in March, up from 4.53% in December. During 1Q09, 79 issuers defaulted, of which 55 were U.S.-based. The U.S. default rate is forecast to reach a high of 14.1% in November

You could try an ETF instead like JNK. I'm short treasuries now and want to go long with corporate bonds. I was in this a couple years ago and got out so I figured I'd take a look again. Expense ratio is double the ETF's that are available at .98% and the performance doesn't appear to be any better. At its best it was barely outperforming USGNX which is light years more conservative investing in GNMA securities backed by the gov't.
This fund has not performed as you say. The SEC will receive my complaint about the fund/comment. The bonds below B are equally distributed based on percentage. Looks like sloppy analysis - just a quick "whatever" position. The only thing that will help is holding it for a recovery time or the FED rate change.

2) financials
3)airlines
4) mid stream commdity players like Chicken producer Pilgrms Pride which is going bankrupt

These businesses suck

if youve been in this fund since 2000 then you have lost money my friend. the current price has still not recovered since that year. now calculating the dividends and compounding you may have a gain only because its in your roth and your not paying taxes.this fund is starting to look good now however and i wish you well. take a look at uscgx another usaa fund and its made me alot of money 18%this year my man..check the numbers and i think you will like what you see.
