When we started keeping our main accounts there a few years ago I looked them over pretty closely and didn't remain in any of them. Costs are high and performance isn't very good IMHO. We like the bank, but their funds suck. They wanted to put our kids money into their growth fund. I looked at the performance and thought it was some kind of sick joke or something. Take a look at the chart for USAAX. Ugh...

Unfortunately, we shareholders can only "guess" since the fund manager is not keeping us informed. Example: it took months for the manager to identify hedge fund selling as a cause of the unprecedented drop in the price of our fund. I had to read it in the Wall Street Journal to have any idea of what is going on.

This is a great fund.
The reason it is tax free is because it looses value faster than it pays dividends.
It's a write off!

Jan 13.09
Today 12.64
Loss .45
Dividends Paid .38

So much for the USAA claim of being "bond rocket scientists".
It will be interesting to see how these bond funds do when the muni bonds start to default en mass.

What's that you say? No? Never happen?
Google "Alabama Sewer Default"
It's just gettin' started.

Stay away from everything USAA.
Each and every one of their funds underperforms.

I got into this fund as a hedge against all other declining funds, but this one is declining also. I decided that since every fund I get into loses money, I'll just go for the oil funds, that way if they start losing, I know the price of gas will come down, so I'll make out one way or another.
