It's not a new fund, it's a fund management company. Oakmark, which is helping to fund DoubleLine, manages $67 billion in assets for institutions and high net worth individuals but does not have any mutual funds. A Morningstar article suggests that Gundlach will likely use an existing mutual fund infrastructure to launch one or more mutual funds. Gundlach's team will also need to recreate the types of systems to evaluate and trade mortgage backed securities that they had at TCW. I would guess it will be at least a few months before retail investors can access Gundlach again.

To be very honest, Gunlach is not my cousin or anything that I get so pi*ed about and start moving my money irrationally. I don't care who sits there on the top as long as they produce for me. What I heard today and read about this new team I think they not just some goofballs taking over this huge fund. They have quite a track record as well. So, if people want to bail before a dividend in December that is their business. More for me. :) I think this fund will be just fine in the near future.

You raise a very good issue. The new Met West management addressed it today on the call without being prompted. They said they were very conscious of being fair to all shareholders and are absolutely not selling based on what is most liquid. Brian Whalen (I think that's right) said the combined team had been rank ordering securities in terms of their idea of price versus value on both sides - agency and non-agency, and were selling from the bottom of the list. He said they were getting prices that they expected, right in line with how they were marked.

I read where Gundlach said the bond sales by TCW have gone well because buyers know his team had picked the securities so were clamoring to buy them. That sounds plausible to me. I don't think most buyers have the kind of systems and expertise that were described on the call today for both TCW and Met West.

Overall, I was very impressed with the presentation today. I was on the edge of selling or reducing my position but based on what I heard today and what I know of Met West, I think I'll hold until I see where Gundlach turns up and if there is a low cost way to invest with him. I don't think there will be a huge difference in performance between Gundlach and this new group over time so I wouldn't even consider paying a load or a high expense ratio.

Some information from today's LA Times (12/11):

"A major risk for TCW is that more of its mutual fund investors, as well as institutional clients such as pension funds, could yank their money, forcing Rivelle to liquidate assets. Gundlach and his team already have set up offices in the US Bank tower in downtown L.A. and are hoping to get back into the money management business within a matter of weeks to lure away former clients."

when funds have to sell, they will sell what they can (i.e. most liquid), not necessarily what want to. the bid/ask spread on some of this non-agency prime paper can be wide.
According to this L.A. Times story, Gundlach held a conference call today with investors, said he expected to be managing money again in 30 to 45 days either in a new firm or with an existing firm. He also said he planned to have a mutual fund open to individual investors and said investors in the funds he managed at TCW should not feel they need to sell because they were perfectly positioned as of last Friday for the investment environment he sees.

WOW - on just the first day, it appears that Jeff may already have 1 Billion dollars waiting for him to manage!

Dec. 8 (Bloomberg) -- Investors pulled about $1 billion from TCW Group Inc. after one-fifth of the fund manager’s fixed- income department left following the firing of Jeffrey Gundlach, according to two people familiar with the matter.

“We have real concerns about the continuity of the fund,” said Andrew Douglas, chief investment officer at Dubuque Bank & Trust Co.’s wealth-management unit in Dubuque, Iowa. “Now we have this big unknown. Can these people navigate that space as well as he did?”

TCW Group plans to sell about $450 million of mortgage- backed securities today including those held by Gundlach’s former fund, the firm’s largest, people familiar with the matter separately told Bloomberg News.

The dollar amount of investor redemptions was first reported today by the Los Angeles Times.

“Douglas, who oversees about $1.5 billion for wealthy investors, said he will withdraw $4 million of the $23 million he has invested in the fund on behalf of his clients, and will consider moving the rest soon.

‘Surprising and Disheartening’

Kurt Brouwer, a financial planner at Brouwer & Janachowski LLC in Tiburon, California, called the change “particularly surprising and disheartening.” His firm, which has “several million” dollars in TCW Total Return, will probably sell its shares, he said in an interview.

“Ironically, we were planning to add to the fund, and now it is very likely that we will sell,” said Brouwer, whose firm manages about $800 million.

‘Out the Door’

Eric Jacobson, director of fixed-income research at Chicago-based Morningstar Inc., said asset managers are vulnerable to losing clients when a prominent manager leaves.

“It’s true what they say, the assets of a fund company take the elevator down and walk out the door every night,” Jacobson said in an interview.

Tad Rivelle, the new TCW fixed income CIO from Met West, is doing a webcast for TGLMX this Friday at 10 AM PST, 1 PM EST.

A Bloomberg story today said that TCW was going to sell $450 million of private label MBS (prime and Alt-A) in an auction. An L.A. Times story reports that over $1 billion, or 8%+ of fund assets, was redeemed yesterday. As of 9/30, the fund had about 7% in cash so they have to sell securities to meet redemptions. By prospectus, TGLMX can't hold more than 35% of its assets in bonds rated less than investment grade, so since the fund was 65/35 agency/private label they have to sell private label proportionately to meet redemptions and keep the fund in compliance.

Did I read somewhere that Jeffrey wanted a bigger stake in TCW?
Could he have wanted to buy TCW? He had to have posed a threat in order to be fired. I am sure it will unfold as with "Tiger".

Very disappointed, this was my core bond fund w/chunk of money.
Not sure if this will pose a threat to the fund because of this catastrophic event. p

Was very very happy that I was able to get out with fund up $.02 from Friday.
Everyone I know that was in fund liquidated as well... i would be surprised if TCW was not forced to sell some of holdings to meet the redemptions.
Im with you guys - Was in this fund only because of Jeff.... When he opens up shop - we will once again become clients.
Will sit sadly in CASH until that time.

At the moment, I think I will just wait to see what transpires in the next few weeks. For now, I have moved to a money market fund, waiting for Jeffery to make his next move/announcement.

TGLMX is/was my favorite bond fund. However, I was in TGLMX only because of Jeffery, for he is TGLMX! I think that very, very few folks can match his skills when it comes to the type of investments he selected for the fund.

Per news articles, I see that many (per Bloomberg – 20 to date) of Jeffery’s colleagues are leaving TCW. With today’s economy/job market, I would not think folks would be leaving their TCW positions, unless there is something going on behind the scenes.

I am sure going to miss the wonderful dividends that I received from TGLMX, but I also don’t want to take the chance of losing what Jeffery made for me this year.

I am confident that Jeffery will successfully resurface with either his own company, or become the star at another fund. I would also guess that the folks that are leaving TCW will end up with him. Once an announcement comes out that this has occurred, I will be one of his first investors in a Total Return Bond Fund.

From Bloomberg today:

Dec. 7 (Bloomberg) -- Two top money managers resigned from TCW Group Inc. after the Dec. 4 firing of Chief Investment Officer Jeffrey Gundlach, who oversaw the Los Angeles-based firm’s Total Return Bond Fund, its biggest.

Phil Barach, co-manager of the $11.9 billion Total Return Bond, and Louis Lucido, a managing director at the firm, quit over the weekend, Gundlach said today in an interview. Erin Freeman, a spokeswoman for TCW, confirmed the resignations, which were reported earlier today by the Los Angeles Times.

Gundlach, 50, said he’s considering starting his own firm or linking up with another asset manager. His fund returned an average of 7.9 percent annually in the past 10 years, topping the 7.7 percent gain by Pacific Investment Management Co.’s Total Return Fund, managed by Bill Gross, according to data from Chicago-based Morningstar Inc.

“Starting my own firm is a possibility,” Gundlach said. He said he’s received “many inquiries” about partnering with existing firms. Neither Barach nor Lucido could be reach at their offices.

TCW Group, which oversees about $110 billion, dismissed Gundlach without giving a reason. The firm said in a Dec. 4 statement that it “deeply regrets the need to take this action.”

Gundlach called the firing a “cost-cutting move.” He was replaced by Tad Rivelle, investment chief of Metropolitan West Asset Management LLC.

TCW announced the change along with its acquisition for an undisclosed amount of Los Angeles-based Metropolitan West, which oversees $30 billion.

As many as 20 members of TCW’s mortgage-backed securities team have submitted resignations, Gundlach said. Freeman said “only a handful of people left.” She declined to comment further.

Societe Generale

Societe Generale SA, the Paris-based bank that owns TCW, has said it would consider taking the fund unit public and hired Citigroup Inc. in July to explore changes to the firm’s ownership structure.

Gundlach, who worked for TCW since 1985, held conversations earlier this year with rivals including Legg Mason Inc.’s Western Asset Management Co. and BlackRock Inc. about a role at those firms, according to people familiar with the talks. The conversations ended and no agreement was struck, the people said.

I too sold all my shares this morning.

I am going to follow Jeffery!!!

I found this in the LA Times this morning:

"Gundlach, 50, isn't going quietly: He said Sunday he was "inappropriately ousted" and had never threatened TCW. Even so, he said he was exploring whether to jump back into money management, either by starting his own firm or by joining another, and expected he could lure many of his longtime clients away from TCW.

Over the weekend, Gundlach got support from some of his lieutenants at TCW. Philip Barach and Louis Lucido, two senior managers of TCW's mortgage-backed securities funds, said they had resigned rather than remain at the firm without Gundlach.

A number of other TCW staffers also quit, but the firm declined to say how many other than that the total was "a handful of people," according to spokeswoman Erin Freeman. She said TCW "fully anticipated" some departures.

The stakes are high for TCW: If significant numbers of pension funds and other institutional clients defect to Gundlach or other firms, TCW's management-fee income would slump. About 60% of TCW's assets are in fixed-income securities, Gundlach's specialty."
